I've wasted too much money on AI image tools I barely use. You know the drill—sign up for a monthly plan, use it twice, forget about it, then watch your credits disappear at the end of the month. Rinse and repeat.

The basics

They use Z-Image Turbo for text prompts and Seedream 4.5 for photo transformations. Most generations finish in 15-30 seconds. Not the fastest I've seen, but fast enough that I'm not alt-tabbing to check Twitter while waiting.

How it actually works

Sign up with Google or email, get 10 free credits. No credit card, no trial countdown timer. Those 10 credits get you either 5 text-to-image generations or 2 image-to-image ones.

Making images from text

The workflow is straightforward:

Write what you want in the prompt box (holds up to 5,000 characters, but I've never used more than 100). Pick an aspect ratio—they have 10 options from square Instagram posts to ultrawide 21:9. Set it to public or private depending on whether you want it in their gallery. Click generate.

Wait 15-20 seconds on average. Image appears.

Each one costs 2 credits. The free tier gets you 5 tries, which is enough to figure out if you like how it handles your style of prompts.

Transforming existing images

This is where it gets more interesting. Upload a photo (up to 4 reference images, 10MB max each), tell it what you want changed, and see what happens.

I tested this with a rough pencil sketch of mountains. Wrote "photorealistic mountain landscape at sunset with dramatic lighting" and got something I could actually use in a client presentation. Took about 25 seconds. Not perfect, but way faster than opening Photoshop.

Costs 4 credits per go since it's doing more processing.

What I learned about prompts

Specificity matters. "A cat" gets you a generic cat. "Ginger tabby with green eyes on a leather armchair, natural window light" gets you something closer to what's in your head.

Also: generate in the aspect ratio you need. Don't make a square image then crop it to 16:9 later. You're just wasting resolution.

What else you should know

Aspect ratios: They have 10 different ones. Most tools give you maybe 3 or 4. This matters more than you'd think—being able to generate directly in 4:5 for Instagram or 21:9 for an ultrawide monitor saves you from having to crop later.

Public vs private: Every image you make can either go in your private collection or their public Explore gallery. I keep client work private, post finished stuff publicly. The gallery is actually worth browsing—some people are making genuinely good stuff on there.

Quality: Everything comes out in HD. No watermarks on paid plans. Even the free credits don't add watermarks right now (as of December 2024), though that might change.

The credit thing: This is the main reason I'm still using it. Credits don't expire unless you buy their PayGo plan (those expire in 90 days). Everything else—Basic, Pro, Ultra—your credits just sit there forever.

I bought 200 credits in early November. Used maybe 60. The other 140 are still there. With Midjourney or DALL-E, those would be gone by now.

What it costs

Free: 10 credits, one-time. Good for testing.

Basic: $9.99/month for 200 credits, or $99.90/year for 2,400 credits. Works out to about $0.04-$0.05 per credit. If you're making maybe 100 images a month, this is fine.

Pro: $19.99/month for 500 credits, or $199.90/year for 6,000. Around $0.03-$0.04 per credit. This is what most people end up on.

Ultra: $39.99/month for 1,200 credits, or $399.90/year for 14,400. About $0.03 per credit. For agencies or if you're generating a lot.

PayGo: $7.99 for 100 credits, one-time purchase. These do expire in 90 days, and they cost more per credit ($0.08). Only makes sense if you want to try the paid tier before committing to a subscription.

The yearly plans give you 20% more credits for your money. If you know you'll use it consistently, go yearly.

How it compares

I've been using Midjourney ($10-60/month), DALL-E 3 through ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), and Leonardo.AI ($12-30/month) for the past year. Here's how Domer stacks up:

Midjourney still has better output quality for artistic stuff. But it's more expensive and you have to use Discord, which is annoying when you're sharing screens with clients. Domer's web interface is cleaner for professional use.

DALL-E 3 is convenient because it's built into ChatGPT. But you get about 100 images a month on the $20 plan and then you're done. Domer's Pro plan is the same price and gets you 250 generations—and they don't vanish at month-end.

Leonardo.AI gives you way more credits per dollar (850 images for $12). But they expire every month. If you use it constantly, Leonardo's better value. If you're like me and generate in bursts, Domer wins because you're not losing credits.

Who this is actually for

It works if you're a content creator making social posts, a small agency juggling client projects, or a marketer who needs to spin up ad variations quickly. Basically anyone who generates images sporadically and hates watching credits expire.

It's not great if you want fine control over every parameter—Stable Diffusion running locally is better for that. Also no video generation yet (they say Q1-Q2 2025), so if you need AI video right now, look elsewhere.

And if you're doing serious high-volume work, the max 14,400 credits per year on Ultra might not be enough.

Questions you might have

Does it do video? Not yet. Their roadmap says video is coming Q1-Q2 2025 (Runway Gen-3 and Luma Dream Machine integration). Right now it's just images.

What formats? PNG or JPG. HD quality, I've tested up to 2048px wide without hitting any limits.

Is there an API? No. Web interface only.

Can you cancel? Yeah, anytime. Your unused credits stick around even after you cancel.

Refunds? Their policy says no refunds on credits, but I've seen them make exceptions for technical issues if you contact support.

Payment? Credit card through Stripe, or crypto through Creem. The crypto option is kinda unusual for these tools.

Should you try it?

If you've read this far, probably yes.
